Allotment to the college is through the Common Entrance Test (CET) held in the month of May every year in Karnataka. Candidates appearing for the CET must have completed their Pre-University course (10+2) or equivalent.

Students seeking admissions to the first year B.D.S course should submit the following documents/certificates in original at the time of admission:

• The qualifying examination marks card (PUC or 10+2).

• Eligibility certificate issued by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences in case of candidates from states other than Karnataka and candidates from countries other than India.

• Transfer certificate from the previous college or institution where the student last studied.

ELIGIBILITY
A candidate must hold the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery of any University recognised by the Dental Council of India and must have completed a minimum of one year as clinical assitant / Sr.House Surgeon/ Tutor/Registrar/Intern in a recognised dental institution.
DURATION
The MDS degree programme extends for a period of two calender years.
SCHEME OF EXAMINATION
There shall be only one examination at the end two years. The examination will be held twice in a year in the month of March/April and Sept./Oct., subject to confirmation by the University.

TEACHING FACULTY DETAILS

This department consists of a clinical section (inclusive of an Endodontics section and a Postgraduate section) and a Pre-clinical section.
The clinical section is equipped with 26 dental units to render treatment to an average of 70 patients per day. The required armamentarium i.e., airotor, micromotor, light cure unit, etc. are attached to each of the dental units. The latest materials and instruments are used to carry out procedures like posterior root canal treatment, bleaching of teeth, endodontic surgeries, post and core restorations, etc. Also attached is a library with the latest editions of books and journals, and a seminar room for regular seminars and review of journals. The Pre-clinical section houses 55 dental units ( phantom heads ) for training undergraduate students in the pre-clinical subject. .

SCHEME OF EXAMINATION Each year is divided into two terms. There will be an examination at the end of each academic year(2nd term). Every student of the BDS degree course is required to pass four professional examinations at the end of Ist, IInd, IIIrd & IVth academic year. A candidate is eligible to attend the University examination on satisfying attendance, progress and proper conduct stipulated by the college and the University. A candidate who fails in the exam can appear in the next examination (supplementary) to be held six months later ie., at the end of the first term. INTERNAL EXAMINATION The college will conduct a set of three internal examinations during the course of each academic year. A final internal examination ( theory & pre-clinical/clinical) will be held at the end of the academic year before the University examination. A candidate must acquire a minimum of 50% marks in each of the internal examinations. The average of the four conducted exams will be sent to the University as the internal marks for each subject. About Library

The Library and Information Centre started along with the Institution in the year 1987. At the same time, the centre developed with the college in its scope, collection and services. Digital facilities are given more importance in the development of the Library and Information Centre.

COLLECTION: The collection of books and journals has been developed in phases along with the teaching curriculum, students, and faculties strength and the clinical facilities.The collection started with 11 core journals ( majority of which are International journals ), and 85 text books.It has now increased to 52 foreign journals and 2500 books including colour atlas', textbooks, reference books, recent and advanced year books.The periodical collection includes Dental Index Literature.

BUDGET: Budget of the Library includes books, periodicals, indexing journals, bibliography, databases, internet connection, and time to time update of the Information technology and Infrastructure. BUILDING: The Library is located at the top floor of the college and hospital building and is separated into an undergraduate reference section and a postgraduate reference & periodicals section. Also included is a Library office, an Audio-Visual room ( with 35 tape cassettes and 10 subject CD's ), and a computer section. Reprographic facilities are also provided by the Library. Computer Section: The Library has a computer with Internet access. Also provided are two printers, CD writer, and a scanner. In-house library automation software has been developed and is used for cataloguing of books and journals. Bar Coding facility will also be introduced. LIBRARY WORKING HOURS: The library functions between 8 AM to 8 PM on working days. During examinations, it is open on holidays also.

REGULATIONS FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS

NRI and Foreign nationals selected for the B.D.S programme are required to pay the tuition fees as scheduled below:

A foreign national seeking admission to any constituent or affiliated college of Bangalore University or Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences shall make an application in the prescribed form to the Registrar of the concerned university along with a Demand Draft of the eligibility fee prescribed for the course, and academic records in original or attested true copies for the consideration of issue of academic eligibilty for admission. The certificate of academic eligibility issued by the University to a foreign national shall not confer the right for admission or guarantee a seat either in the University college/Department or in any affiliated colleges. The certificate shall be valid for admission only to the academic year for which it is issued.
The Head of any institution/college under the jurisdiction of the University proposing to admit the candidate to the said course of study shall intimate the same to the University. The University inturn will consider the issue of permission of admission after verification of the quota for foreign students allowed for the colleges.
No foreign national seeking admission in any affiliated college of the University shall claim a student visa based on the certificate of academic elegibility issued by the University. A student is eligible for such visa only on production of the endorsement of the University permitting the admission. Foreign students should produce 'No Objection Certificate' from the Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India.
No Head of any affiliated college shall issue any certificate of eligibilty to any foreign national.
Foreign students shall produce a certificate from the competent authority for having adequate knowledge of English or else shall have to pass the English test conducted by the University before issual of the certificate of academic eligibility.
No refund of eligibilty fee shall be allowed under any circumstances.

CORRECTION OF CLASS III MALOCCLUSION USING RAPID MAXILLARY EXPANSION ( RME )

This is the case report of an 8 year old female patient reported to the Department of Orthodontics, whosechief complaint was crooked teeth. The patient desired treatment for esthetic and functional reasons.
Extra oral examination :

• Shape of head - mesocephalic
• Facial profile - orthognathic
• Facial divergence - straight
• Inter labial gap - 3 mm
• Naso labial angle - acute
• Maxilla - retrusive

Intra oral examination :

• Number of teeth
• Rotations
• Crowding of lower anteriors

Maxillary arch : U shaped, average size, symmetrical, with rotations of teeth.
Mandibular arch : U shaped, average size, symmetrical, with crowding of anterior teeth.
Arches in occlusion :

• Antero-posterior relation :

1. Molar relation : right / left - Class I relation
2. Overjet - reversed
3. Anterior cross-bite present

• Transverse relation :

1. Posterior cross-bite present
2. Midline shift to the right by 1 mm

Diagnosis & treatment records : From the cephalometric analysis and study models, it was inferred that the patient had Class III jaw bases with Class I molar relation along with anterior and posterior cross-bite ( maxilla contracted ), with lower anterior crowding.

2. De-rotation
3. Lower incisor de-crowding

Treatment plan :

1. Rapid maxillary expansion (RME ) with extraoral traction ( bonded type )
2. IInd phase levelling and aligning

The type of appliance used was fixed and the estimated duration of treatment was 3 years, with a 3 year retention period. The prognosis and stability after treatment was good.

Orthodontia

Orthodontics envisages the merging of biology with technology creating the harmonious face by the movement of teeth and / or the modulation of growth.

The hoary tradition of excellence is propagated with the imparting and practice of sound basics, so that the student can handle the entire of gamut of malocclusions be it with the humble "removable plate" or sophisticated "invisible braces", from the preventive to the corrective integrating specialised surgical procedures, and from treating growing children to adults.

The credo of selecting the appropriate appliance or treatment modality for a patient rather than straight jacketing patients for an appropriate system is adhered to.

The rich experience of an erudite faculty supported by auxillary dental personnel is the "jewel in the crown" of the department and is its greatest asset.

Oral Surgery

The department consists of an Exodontia section, Minor O.T and Major O.T with with a ten bed ward exclusively for this department. The department has a library with updated editions of books and journals.

	Exodontia section has separate chambers for the staff and housesurgeons. Included in this are about 25 dental chairs to carry out extractions and sufficient to accomodate about 50 patients per day.
Minor O.T. consisting of four dental chairs has all the required armamentarium.The surgical facilities are available for cleft lip and palate correction,excision of oral malignant tumors and cysts of the jaw, orthognathic surgeries, etc.
	Major O.T. has the best equipment which includes O.T. light with an inbuilt camera, air conditioning and all the armamentarium required to perform major surgeries. The O.T. is also provided with two full time staff nurses and one anesthetist. Also includes well planned changing rooms, sterilization room, recovery room and scrubbing room.

Oral Pathology

The department is housed on the first floor of the college and hospital building and is divided into a practical hall and a laboratory.
The practical hall has a capacity of 40, and is used for the conduction of practical classes in Dental Anatomy & Histology, and Oral Pathology.
The laboratory is equipped to carry out the necessary tests like blood investigations, and tissue processing.All biopsy specimens are processed in the laboratory using H&E stain.Also included, are about 25 microscopes for use by students.
Attached to the department, is a museum consisting of models ( of dental hard tissues ), and specimens for teaching purposes.
FUTURE PLAN: The department has the following plans for the future:

• Introduce a postgraduate course in Oral Pathology within the next two years.
• Organize a multimedia presentation room equipped with a Research Microscope with CCD attachment to be used for teaching purposes and demonstrations.
• Start a separate Microbiology section where more specialised investigations, immunological assays, culture, etc. can be carried out.

Oral Medicine

The clinical section houses 15 dental chairs to screen day-to-day patients (out-patients ). On an average, 100 patients are screened per day for various dental and oral diseases. After the initial check-up and diagnosis, the patients are referred to the other clinical departments depending on the type of treatment required for each patient.
Students undergoing the undergraduate course are taught through lectures, clinical case studies, group discussions, etc. Importance is given to the common diseases affecting the teeth and supporting structures, and mucosal lesions unique to the oral cavity. Facilities to train postgraduate students are also provided by the department. The Radiology wing has three intra-oral X-ray units, one mobile X-ray unit, and an Orthopantomogram ( OPG ) with Cephalostat. The X-ray processing room is equipped for both conventional and automatic processing.
The department is also equipped with a soft LASER used in the treatment of oral mucosal lesions such as ulcers, dry socket, and cases of Trigeminal Neuralgia. A seminar room equipped with audio-visual aids and an up-to-date library for academic discussions is attached to the department.

Prosthodontia

	The department is housed in the second floor of the college building which provides a panoromic view. The patients who visit the department can forget the strenuous treatment procedures which they undergo once they see the scenic beauty profusely provided to them through the glass windows. The free flowing cool breeze is a bonus to all the visitors which make each patient forget the hardships of life including the dental pain.
The department consists of an expansive undergraduate and postgraduate clinic housing nearly twenty chairs. The postgraduate department has a high tech cobalt-chromium and ceramic laboratory which provides state of art services to the patients
The department offers both Undergraduate(BDS) and Postgraduate(MDS) courses. Instruction is given through lectures, clinics and laboratory demonstrations, supervised clinical training, seminars, group discussions, journal reviews ect. Evaluations are done periodically. The institution is affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.
	Maxillofacial prosthetic division offers specialized rehabilitative service to cancer and accident victims. Facial and body parts are fabricated using techniques developed exclusively in this center. The department is looked after by the only centre in south India offering maxillofacial services. We receive patients from all over India.

Periodontia

The Department of Periodontics comprises of an Undergraduate section and Post-graduate section. The undergraduate section houses 15 chairs and attends to a regular patient inflow of 40-50 patients a day.
The Post-graduate section accomodates six chairs and adjoining seminar room with Audio-Visual accessories and a full-fledged department library to conduct academic interactiond. The Post-graduate teaching programme is comprehensive. The students are trained in the latest treatment modalities from basic preventive therapy to resective and regenerative procedures. A well planned treatment schedule inclusive of management of acute conditions, traditional and contemporary treatment for pockets and furcation involvement like flap surgery, resections, bone grafting and GTR. Mucogingival surgical procedures like soft tissues and pedicle grafts and frenectomies.
Emphasis on inter-disciplenary apporach with special attention for strategic teeth, pre-prosthetic periodontal surgical procedures like crown-lengthening, ridge augmentation, vestibuloplastics temporary and permanent splinting for mobile teeth using newer materials. Varied, non-invasive apporaches for medically compromised patients including local drug delivery system. The department boasts of six full time M.D.S. staff members.

Paedodontia

The Paedodontics department recently developed on the second floor of the college and hospital building, is equipped with 21 specialized Paedodontic electronic chairs exclusively for children.
The department is spaced out for material storage, sterilization, lab, and a seminar room.

The Paedodontics department offers a variety of Preventive Moduling, treatment, and management of children and young adults to 12-13 years of age.

CHANDRA TRACER

This tracer has been designed by Dr. Chandrasekharan Nair, Professor & HOD, Department of Prosthodontics & Maxillofacial Prosthetics, M.R.Ambedkar Dental College & Hospital.
Fabricatory process of complete dentures has passed through contrasting facets. Impressions and articulators have influenced the science of complete dentures tremendously, and those have marked the first signs of effective integration of both clinical and laboratory procedures. Centric relation is a position of the mandible which is easily identified clinically by the operator and can be achieved repeatedly by the patient. It is not a feasible suggestion to ascertain the centric position routinely through radiographs. Graphic tracings using intraoral tracers has become relevant in this context.
CHANDRA TRACER : This is an intraoral tracer which has a two component assembly. The upper bearing plate has a pencil holder and the lower bearing plate has a central bearing screw and tracing platform of dimensions 35 x 47 mm, which has a facility to hold a drawing sheet. A sharp pencil is attached to the upper component.

The upper plate is attached flush with the occlusal plane and the lower bearing plate is fixed 3mm below the occlusal plane providing space for the interocclusal record. The tracer is placed in the mouth and the tracings are recorded on the paper fixed to the table. After many repetitions, the best tracing is selected, and the centric and protrusive plaster records are obtained using quick setting plaster. Plastic sheets are used for stabilisation during the recording.

HEMIMANDIBULAR HYPERPLASIA OF RIGHT SIDE OF MANDIBLE

A female patient aged 14 years was referred to the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, M.R. Amnedkar Dental College & Hospital by a general dental practioner with a complaint of swelling in relation to lower right mandible.
On Examination:

Asymmetry of the face was noted which gave the face a rotated appearance.Unilateral asymmetric increase in height of the face had given rise to sloping of rima oris. Facial canting was noted. Deviation of jaw to left side on opening of mouth.

Radiograph and CT scan showed :

Condylar hyperplasia of right side.Vertical excess of mandibular ramus on right side.

Diagnosis : The case was diagnosed as Hemimandibular Hyperplasia of right side. Since the patient's age was 14 years, and the growth had not been completed, it was decided to wait before undertaking surgical correction. The patient is under regular observation.

ACUPUNCTURE AS A METHOD OF INDUCING DENTAL ANAESTHESIA

Acupuncture is an ancient science followed to relieve pain due to various ailments in the body. This treatment was followed in India and China 5000 years back using thorns and needles. Acupuncture is based on the well accepted theory of "Yang - Yin". This theory states that every human body behaves like one cell and has positive and negative charges, i.e., Yang is the proton, and Yin is the electron in the cell which represents the 'structure of matter '.
Electrical energy appears in the body at birth and lives in all the organs. Energy flows in a particular pattern when the human body is healthy, so that an energy balance is maintained in the body. When the function of the organ is altered, there is an imbalance in the energy flow.
In Acupuncture, the energy lines appear to flow from head to toe, involving all organs in a particular pattern known as " Meridian Lines ".
For the treatment of a particular ailment, a fine needle of guage 32, 1-1.5 inches in length, is inserted along the meridian line, which stimulates the particular organ along this line. The stimulation of electrical waves by the needle causes a release of Endorphins - 5 Hydroxy tryptamine and Epinephrine - which relieves pain by acting on higher centres in the brain.

Acupuncture also claims to have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effects. It has proven effective in relieving chronic neck pain, headache, back pain, and neuralgias. It is also considered that the ears represent the whole body and have 62 points, by stimulating which, pain in different parts of the body can be relieved.

Acupuncture was used to induce dental anaesthesia in this patient, who required extraction of tooth 46 ( #30 ). The extraction was performed by Dr. Jain ( Postgraduate student ) and supervised by Dr. K.G. Ghorpade ( Professor & HOD ).

Adequate anaesthesia was achieved for the extraction, making Acupuncture as one of the options to achieve dental anaesthesia without the use of pharmacological agents.
